Deniz Gamze Ergüven (born 4 June 1978) is a talented Turkish-French film director. She is best known for her first major film, Mustang. This movie earned her many awards and nominations.

Early Life and Education
Deniz Gamze Ergüven was born in Ankara, Turkey. In the 1980s, she moved to France with her family. She grew up and went to school there. She studied filmmaking at a famous film school called La Fémis. She finished her studies in 2008.
Filmmaking Career
In 2011, Ergüven was invited to the Cannes Film Festival's Atelier program. This program helps filmmakers develop their movie ideas. She was working on a project called The Kings. While there, she met another director, Alice Winocour.
Creating Mustang
Ergüven had trouble finding money to make her film The Kings. Alice Winocour suggested she write a story that was more personal. This led them to start working on the script for Mustang.
Mustang was Ergüven's first full-length movie. It was shown for the first time at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. There, it won an important award called the Europa Cinemas Label Award. The film was also shown at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.
Mustang was chosen by France to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This is one of the most famous film awards in the world. The movie was also nominated for several César Awards in France. Ergüven won the César Award for Best First Feature Film. She also won the César Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Ergüven was very surprised by how much people loved her film. She said that the positive attention just kept growing after the festival.
Later Projects
In May 2016, Ergüven announced her next movie, Kings. This film stars the famous actress Halle Berry. The story of Kings takes place during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The movie first premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017.
In June 2016, Ergüven was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This is the group that gives out the Academy Awards. Being invited means she is a recognized and respected filmmaker.
Personal Life
Deniz Gamze Ergüven was pregnant while she was filming Mustang. She gave birth to her son on February 11, 2015.
