Deniz Gamze Ergüven (born June 4, 1978) is a talented film director. She is from both Turkey and France. She is most famous for her first big movie, Mustang.

Growing Up and School
Deniz Gamze Ergüven was born in Ankara, Turkey. In the 1980s, she moved to France. She spent her childhood and went to school there. She studied filmmaking at a famous school called La Fémis. She finished her studies in 2008.
Her Film Career
Making Mustang
In 2011, Deniz was invited to a special event. It was at the Cannes Film Festival. She went there to work on a movie idea called The Kings. At this event, she met another director, Alice Winocour.
Deniz found it hard to get money for her movie. Alice suggested she write a story that was more personal. So, they started working together. They wrote the script for the movie Mustang.
Mustang Success
Her first big movie, Mustang, was shown for the first time. This happened at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. It won an award there called the Europa Cinemas Label Award. Later, it was also shown at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.
Mustang was a very successful film. It was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This is a huge honor for movies not made in English. France chose Mustang to represent their country.
Deniz also won several César Awards in France. She won for Best First Feature Film. She also won for Best Original Screenplay. This means she wrote a great story.
Deniz was very surprised by how much people loved her movie. She said that she thought it would only be popular for a short time. But the excitement just kept growing!
Other Projects
In May 2016, Deniz announced her next movie. It was called Kings. This film starred the famous actress Halle Berry. The story was set during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The movie was first shown on September 13, 2017. This happened at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
In June 2016, Deniz was asked to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This is the group that gives out the Academy Awards. It's a big honor for directors.
Personal Life
Deniz Gamze Ergüven was pregnant while filming Mustang. She gave birth to her son on February 11, 2015.
