Dennis Campbell Kennedy (1936 – 3 April 2026) was an important Irish journalist and writer. He wrote many books about Irish and European topics. Some of his well-known books include Square Peg and Climbing Slemish: An Ulster Memoir.

Dennis Kennedy began his career as a journalist at the Belfast Telegraph. Later, he worked for The Irish Times in different important roles. He also led the European Commission Office in Northern Ireland. He taught about European Studies at Queen's University, Belfast. Kennedy was also the President of the Irish Association for Economic, Cultural, and Social Affairs and the Belfast Literary Society.

Early Life and Learning

Dennis Kennedy was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, in 1936. He went to Wallace High School in Lisburn. He then studied at Queen's University, Belfast, and Trinity College Dublin. In 1958, he earned a degree in Modern History from Queen's. Later, in 1985, he received his PhD from Trinity College Dublin.

A Life in Journalism

Kennedy worked as a journalist in many places. These included Northern Ireland, the United States, Ethiopia, and the Republic of Ireland. After his journalism career, he became the head of the European Commission office in Belfast. He also taught European Studies at Queen's University Belfast.

Reporting from Far and Wide

His journalism journey started in 1959 as a reporter for the Belfast Telegraph. In 1963, he won a special award called a Fellowship. This allowed him to spend over a year in the United States. During this time, he worked for three months at the Newark News in New Jersey. He wrote about his experiences in a book called Yankee Doodles. This book even describes being at the White House during President John F. Kennedy's funeral.

In 1964, he returned to the Belfast Telegraph. He became the Chief Leader writer there. In 1966, he moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. There, he worked as an assistant news editor for a radio station called RVOG.

Leading at The Irish Times

In 1968, Dennis Kennedy came back to Ireland. He joined The Irish Times in Dublin as a reporter. He quickly moved up in his career. In 1969, he became the Diplomatic Correspondent. This meant he reported on news about different countries and their relationships. In 1972, he became the European Editor. He then became Assistant Editor in 1974 and Deputy Editor in 1982.

European Affairs and Teaching

After 17 years at The Irish Times, Kennedy left in 1985. He moved back to Belfast. There, he became the Head of the European Commission Office in Northern Ireland. He held this important role from 1985 to 1991.

In 1993, he started working at Queen's University, Belfast. He was a research fellow and later a lecturer in European Studies. He shared his knowledge with students until he retired in 2001.

Kennedy also took on leadership roles. He was President of the Irish Association for Cultural, Economic and Social Relations from 1999 to 2000. He also served as President of the Belfast Literary Society from 2006 to 2007. He was also one of the people who helped start The Cadogan Group in 1991.
