Dennis Michael Seaton (born on March 2, 1967) is a British soul and R&B singer and songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer of the famous British reggae band Musical Youth.

Early Life and Musical Youth

Dennis Seaton became famous as part of the band Musical Youth. The group was formed in 1979 by friends Kelvin Grant, his older brother Michael Grant, Patrick Waite, and his younger brother Freddie Waite. They started the band while attending Duddeston Manor School.

The boys played at local talent shows and concerts all over the United Kingdom. Soon, Dennis Seaton joined the group. They even performed on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show, where they sang two of their own songs.

Rise to Fame

In late 1981, MCA Records signed the band. This was a big step for them.

In the middle of 1982, when Dennis Seaton was 15 years old, the group released their hit song "Pass the Dutchie". This song was a play on words from another song. It talked about poor Jamaican people using a "dutchie," which is a type of cooking pot.

The song was a huge success! It reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. It also made it to number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. Musical Youth was the first black music group to have their music videos played on MTV.

After their hit single, the band released their first album, The Youth of Today. It came out worldwide on October 22, 1982.

Grammy Nomination and Later Years

In 1984, Dennis Seaton and Musical Youth were nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy Award. This is a very important music award. However, they did not win; the award went to Culture Club.

On September 9, 1983, the group released their second and last album, Different Style. This album had two singles, "Tell Me Why" and "007". These songs were not as successful on the music charts.

Dennis Seaton announced that he was leaving the group, and Musical Youth broke up in June 1985. After leaving, Seaton started his own short-lived group called XMY. He also became a Christian.

Solo Career and Reunion

In 1989, Dennis Seaton released his first solo album, Imagine That. He even got help with songwriting from the famous musician Stevie Wonder. However, his solo music career did not become very big.

After that, he worked as a delivery driver. Then, he worked in the car rental business for twelve years. He even became a co-owner of his own car rental company. Dennis also went back to school and earned a music degree.

In late 1993, Dennis Seaton rejoined Musical Youth. Sadly, on February 18, 1993, his bandmate Patrick Waite passed away from natural causes. This left the group with four members.

Eight years later, in 2001, Musical Youth reformed again. They came back into the public eye as a group of five. Today, Dennis Seaton and Michael Grant still perform together as "Musical Youth."

Recent Appearances

In 2009, Dennis Seaton appeared on The Justin Lee Collins Show. He was featured as a "blast from the past" musical guest.

On June 28, 2009, he was on Sunday Live with Adam Boulton on Sky News. He talked about the life, passing, and lasting impact of Michael Jackson.

Currently, Dennis Seaton works as a trainer for HSS Hire.
