The Denver Dry Goods Building
This famous building was once home to The Denver Dry Goods Company. This store was a very popular place to shop. Many people in Colorado still remember its famous saying: "Where Colorado Shops With Confidence."
A Giant Store in Denver
The Denver Dry Goods store was truly massive. A postcard from 1916 described it as "The Largest Store in the Central West." It was 400 feet long. That's longer than a football field! The store had seven acres of floor space. Imagine how much shopping you could do there! It also had 1,200 employees. This shows how big and busy the store was.
From Shopping to Homes
The Denver Dry Goods Company Building was first built in 1889. Over the years, it grew even bigger. Additions were made in 1898, 1906, and 1924. This helped the store serve more and more customers.
In 1986, the store became part of the May Company. But the building's story didn't end there. In 1994, it was changed from a department store into apartments. Now, people live in the very place where shoppers once found everything they needed. This building is a great example of how old buildings can get a new life.
What is a Department Store?
A department store is a large shop that sells many different kinds of products. It's like many smaller stores all under one roof. You might find clothes, shoes, home goods, toys, and even furniture. Each type of product is usually in its own "department." Department stores were very popular places for families to shop.
