Who Was Denzil Holles?
Denzil Holles was the son of William Holles (MP). When he married Eleanor Sheffield, the daughter of Edmund Sheffield, 1st Baron Sheffield, his father gave him the large estate of Irby upon Humber. This happened in the middle of the 1500s.
Life at Irby upon Humber
Denzil Holles didn't just own the land; he lived there and cared for it. He spent a lot of his time at Irby, making many improvements to the estate. He was even building a new main house when he passed away in 1590.
His cousin, Gervase Holles, wrote about the estate later, when Denzil's son John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare owned it. He said it was a wonderful place:
...a place happy in the sweetness of the air and very delightful by the pleasant hills and dales, where there are dry and inviting walks both summer and winter, with a welcome prospect towards the sea; affording as good hawking and hunting, and as good conveniency for training and airing young horses, as can be found anywhere.
This means the estate was known for its fresh air, beautiful hills and valleys, and great places for walking. It was also perfect for outdoor activities like hunting and training horses, with nice views of the sea.
Denzil Holles' Family
Denzil Holles and Eleanor Sheffield had several children. At least five of their children's baptisms (when they were officially welcomed into the church) are recorded. They include:
- William Holles (1562–1637);
- John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare (1564–1637);
- Frances Holles (born 1566), who married Francis Cooke;
- Jane Holles (born 1568), who married Thomas Sanderson;
- Anne Holles;
- Thomas Holles, who married Gertrude.
Denzil Holles' Public Service
Denzil Holles was involved in important events during his time. In 1569, he served as a captain under Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick. He helped to put down the Northern Rebellion, which was a major uprising against Queen Elizabeth I.
He was also chosen to be a member of parliament for East Retford two times. He served in this role in 1584 and again in 1586. Being a Member of Parliament meant he helped make laws and represent his area in the government.
