Edmund Sheffield's Life
Early Life and Guardianship
When Edmund's father passed away in 1531, Edmund was still young. This meant he needed a guardian to look after him and his property. His care was first given to George Boleyn, Viscount Rochford. George was the brother of Anne Boleyn, who became King Henry VIII's second wife.
However, both George Boleyn and Anne Boleyn faced serious trouble and were executed in 1536. After this, Edmund's guardianship was moved to John de Vere, 15th Earl of Oxford.
Marriage and Title
Edmund Sheffield married Anne de Vere, who was the daughter of his guardian, John de Vere. They got married before January 31, 1538. Edmund and Anne had a son and three daughters together.
In 1547, Edmund was given a special honor. He was made a Baron Sheffield of Butterwick. This meant he became a member of the Peerage of England, a group of high-ranking nobles.
Death During Kett's Rebellion
Just two years after becoming a Baron, Edmund Sheffield was involved in a major event called Kett's Rebellion. This rebellion happened in Norwich in 1549. During a fight in the streets of Norwich, Lord Sheffield fell from his horse.
It was common at the time for a nobleman who fell to remove his helmet. This showed he was ready to be captured and later released for a payment (called a ransom). However, a butcher, reportedly named Fulke, sadly struck him, and Lord Sheffield died from his injuries.
His death was a big loss for the army he was with. Without a senior leader, the army had to retreat. Edmund Sheffield was buried at St Martin at Palace, Norwich.
