Deon Anthony Cole (born January 9, 1972) is an American actor, comedian, and screenwriter. He is famous for playing Charlie Telphy in the TV show Black-ish. For this role, he was nominated for two NAACP Image Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Deon Cole also won the Doris Award on the ABC show To Tell the Truth on June 25, 2020. He currently stars in the TV series Average Joe.

Cole was also nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards. These nominations were for his writing work on the late-night talk shows The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and Conan.

Early Life and Education

Deon Cole was born on January 9, 1972, in Roseland, a neighborhood in Chicago. He went to Thornridge High School. Later, he studied acting at Philander Smith College, where he earned a degree.

Deon Cole started his comedy career in a fun way. A friend bet him $50 that he wouldn't go on stage at a comedy club in Chicago. He took the challenge and that's how it all began!

Writing for TV Shows

From 2009 to 2010, Cole was a writer for The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. He then continued as a writer for Conan from 2010 to 2012. He often appeared in funny skits on both shows. His writing work earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations. In 2010, he also joined Conan O'Brien on his "The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour."

Stand-Up Comedy and Other Projects

In February 2010, Deon Cole performed at "Comic Aid Haiti." This comedy show helped people affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake. He has also performed stand-up comedy on other TV shows like John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show and Lopez Tonight.

Cole even started his own company, Cole Blooded. Through this company, he produced a sketch comedy show called Deon Cole's Black Box. It first aired on TBS in June 2013.

Deon Cole had a recurring role as Charlie Telphy on the ABC sitcom Black-ish. He became a main cast member in the show's fourth season. He also appeared in Black-ish's spin-off show, Grown-ish. From 2016 to 2018, Cole was part of the cast of Angie Tribeca.

In 2017, Cole hosted the game show Face Value on BET. That same year, he had a special half-hour comedy set on the Netflix series The Standups. In October 2019, Netflix released his stand-up special called Deon Cole: Cole Hearted. Since 2019, he has also been in TV commercials for Old Spice body wash with actress Gabrielle Dennis.

On June 25, 2020, Cole appeared on To Tell the Truth and won the Doris Award. This made him the second person on the show to receive this award.

On May 6, 2023, Deon Cole received an honorary doctorate degree from his old college, Philander Smith College.
