Deon Kevin Johnson is an important leader in the Episcopal Church. He serves as the eleventh bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. He was chosen for this role on November 23, 2019.
Bishop Johnson officially began his duties on June 13, 2020. This ceremony, called a consecration, was originally planned for an earlier date. However, it had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. He took over from Wayne Smith as the Bishop of Missouri.

Early Life and Education
Deon Johnson was born in Barbados, an island country. When he was 14 years old, he moved to the United States. He worked hard in his studies.
College and Seminary
He attended Case Western Reserve University. In 2000, he earned a degree in English and History. After that, he continued his education at the General Theological Seminary. He completed his Master of Divinity degree there in 2003.
Becoming a Church Leader
Deon Johnson took important steps to become a church leader. He was ordained as a deacon on June 15, 2003. Later that year, on December 19, 2003, he was ordained as a priest.
Early Roles in the Church
After becoming a priest, he served at Christ Church in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He worked there as an associate rector until 2006. An associate rector helps the main leader of a church.
From 2006, he became the rector at St. Paul's Church in Brighton, Michigan. The rector is the main priest in charge of a church. Starting in 2012, he also worked as a consultant. He advised the Office of Black Ministries, helping with important church programs.
Election as Bishop
On November 23, 2019, Deon Johnson was elected to be the Bishop of Missouri. This was a significant event. He won the election on the very first vote. He received the most votes from both the clergy (church leaders) and lay members (regular church members). He is the first Black bishop in the Episcopal Church in this role.
