Deon Kevin Johnson is an important leader in the Episcopal Church. He serves as the eleventh bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. He was chosen for this role on November 23, 2019.
His official ceremony, called a consecration, happened on June 13, 2020. This event was originally planned for an earlier date. However, it had to be postponed due to the global health situation at the time. Bishop Johnson took over from Wayne Smith.
Early Life and Education
Deon Johnson was born in Barbados. When he was 14 years old, he moved to the United States. He worked hard in his studies.
College and Seminary
He attended Case Western Reserve University. In 2000, he earned a degree in English and History. Later, he continued his education at The General Theological Seminary. He graduated from there in 2003.
Becoming a Priest
After finishing his studies, Deon Johnson became a deacon. This happened on June 15, 2003. A few months later, on December 19, 2003, he was ordained as a priest.
Early Church Roles
His first job as a priest was at Christ Church. This church is located in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He worked there as an associate rector until 2006.
After that, he moved to Brighton, Michigan. He became the rector at St. Paul's Church. A rector is the main priest in charge of a church.
Consultant Work
From 2012 onwards, he also worked as a consultant. He helped the Office of Black Ministries. This role involved giving advice and support.
Election as Bishop
On November 23, 2019, Deon Johnson was elected as the Bishop of Missouri. This was a big step in his career. He was chosen on the very first vote. Both the clergy (church leaders) and lay members (regular churchgoers) voted for him.
