Discovering the Depauperate Fleabane

This plant is a small, long-lasting herb. It is called a perennial herb because it lives for more than two years. It usually grows to be very short, less than 7 centimeters (about 2.8 inches) tall.

What Does It Look Like?

The Erigeron mancus has a strong, woody taproot. This root helps it stay firm in the ground. Its leaves are interesting. They are pinnately lobed near the bottom. This means they have deep cuts or divisions, like a feather. The leaves higher up the stem do not have these lobes.

The plant usually grows only one flower head on each stem. These flower heads are unique. They have several yellow disc florets. These are the tiny flowers in the center of a daisy. However, this plant does not have ray florets. These are the petal-like parts you see on the outside of a typical daisy.

Where Does It Grow?

The depauperate fleabane likes to grow in high places. You can find it in alpine meadows. These are grassy areas high up in the mountains. It also grows on ridge tops and rocky slopes. These are all places with high elevations.
