The Derby Dinner Playhouse is a special place in Clarksville, Indiana, where you can enjoy a delicious meal and watch a live play at the same time! It first opened its doors in 1974. It's the only dinner theater like it in the Louisville, Kentucky area and in southern Indiana.
The Story of Derby Dinner Playhouse
In the early 1970s, some local business people thought Clarksville needed a fun place for shows and events. A group called Windmill Dinner Theatre, which already had theaters in Cincinnati, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana, built and managed this new place.
Later, in 1985, Carolyn Thomas and Bekki Jo Schneider bought the theater. Carolyn Thomas was the general manager at the time. Bekki Jo Schneider now produces and manages all parts of the business. They still own more than half of the company.
What's on the Menu?
At Derby Dinner Playhouse, you get to enjoy a tasty American-style buffet. It features popular dishes like fried chicken, fish, and roast beef. There's also a fresh salad bar and warm rolls.
Don't forget about dessert! They have many sweet treats, including their famous peanut butter pie. You can also buy drinks from a full bar. Before the main show, a singing group called "Overtures" performs for everyone.
The Stage and Shows
The theater uses a special setup called "theatre-in-the-round." This means the stage is in the middle, and the audience sits all around it. The actors are all professionals.
Shows happen from Tuesday through Sunday evenings. There are also daytime shows, called matinees, on Wednesday and Sunday. Each year, the Derby Dinner Playhouse puts on eight big main shows. They also have four special shows just for children and ten concerts.
