Derrylyn is a beautiful old house located at 16 Deakin Avenue in Haberfield, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. It's a very special building because of its history and unique design. This is why it's officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. Being on this list means it's protected so that people can enjoy it for many years to come.

History of Derrylyn

The area where Derrylyn stands, known as Haberfield and Dobroyd Point, was once mostly farmland. This changed when a steam tramway was built, connecting it to places like Leichhardt and Five Dock.

How Haberfield Grew

In 1901, a real estate agent named Richard Stanton bought a large piece of land, about 50 acres, in the Dobroyd Estate. He was an Irish immigrant whose family had a furniture business. By 1910, Richard Stanton owned even more land, about 200 acres!

The first part of the estate was divided into smaller blocks for houses by 1903. Richard Stanton himself moved to the new estate in 1907. He even had a new house built for himself, designed by John Spencer-Stansfield. This architect is thought to have designed over 1,000 houses in the Haberfield area.

Building Derrylyn

Derrylyn was built in 1910. It quickly became a notable home in the growing suburb.

Protecting the House

In 1981, Derrylyn received special protection called an "Interim Conservation Order." This was requested by the owner at the time, who wanted to make sure the house's original look would be kept safe.

Later, in 1983, a "Permanent Conservation Order" was placed on the property. This meant the house was officially protected from major changes. That same year, some money was provided to help build a new picket fence around the property.

Changes Over Time

Even with its protected status, some changes were allowed to make the house more modern.

  • In 1984, a swimming pool was added to the property. It included brick paving and a child-safe fence.
  • Approval was also given for a garage or carport in 1985. It was designed to match the house's style.
  • The grounds around the house were re-landscaped in 1992, making the garden look fresh.

On April 2, 2000, Derrylyn was officially moved to the State Heritage Register. This was an important step in recognizing its value.

Historic view of Derrylyn

Derrylyn is a large, single-story house built in the Federation style. It uses two different colors of bricks, which gives it a unique look. The roof is made of beautiful slate and terracotta tiles. You'll also notice many tall, roughcast chimneys sticking up from the roof. The house is easy to spot because it sits right on the corner of Dalhousie Street and Deakin Avenue in Haberfield. Many of its original features are still there today.

Why Derrylyn is Heritage Listed

Derrylyn was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. It met certain important rules to be listed.

Demonstrating History

The house is important because it shows how cultural and natural history developed in New South Wales. Derrylyn, built in 1910, is a great example of a large Federation-style cottage. Its two-tone bricks, slate and terracotta roof, and many tall chimneys make it stand out. Its location and original features help us understand the history of the area.
