The Desenberg Building is an old commercial building. You can find it at 251 East Michigan Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is part of the Haymarket Historic District. This important building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it is a special place worth protecting.

What is the Desenberg Building?

The Desenberg Building is a three-story building. It was built for businesses. The building has three main sections for shops on the first floor. It is about 58 feet wide and 90 feet long.

How Does the Building Look?

The front of the building has three main parts. The first floor has large storefronts for shops. The top two floors are covered in orange bricks. The windows on these floors are in groups of two. Between the window groups are wide sections with special clay decorations. A cool metal design runs along the very top of the building.

Who Built the Desenberg Building?

In 1885, a man named Bernhard Desenberg wanted to build a large business place. He planned for it to be a "wholesale grocery." This means it would sell food in large amounts to other stores.

Famous Architects Who Designed It

Mr. Desenberg hired a famous architecture company. This company was called Adler & Sullivan from Chicago. The main architects were Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan. They were very well-known for their designs.

Adler & Sullivan had worked in Kalamazoo before. They designed the Academy of Music Building in 1882. That building is not there anymore. Maybe Frederick Bush, from the building company Bush & Patterson, told Mr. Desenberg about them. Bush & Patterson helped build the Desenberg Building.
