How the Destin Fishing Rodeo Started
The Destin Fishing Rodeo began in 1948. The town of Destin was much smaller back then. The people who lived there wanted to find a way to bring more visitors to their beautiful beach town. They hoped the fishing contest would attract tourists even when it wasn't peak summer season.
The very first rodeo was small, with only a few people joining. The prizes were quite different from today! Winners could get things like kitchen appliances, car parts, or even pieces of land.
Why It's Called a "Rodeo"
You might wonder why a fishing contest is called a "rodeo." It's a cool story! The first European settler in Destin, Leonard Destin, and other early fishermen used to catch fish and keep them in special pens built in the water. This was like cowboys herding cattle into a rodeo pen. These water pens kept the fish alive until they were ready to be sold. This was before modern boats had special tanks to keep fish alive. So, the fishing rodeo got its name from these early fishing traditions!
The Rodeo Grows
Today, the prizes are much bigger! Winners can get amazing vacations, cool fishing gear, and even over $100,000 in cash prizes. Because the early rodeos were so popular, the event was moved to October. This helped extend the tourist season past the warm summer months.
The Destin Fishing Rodeo keeps growing every year. New events and fun activities are added all the time. They even have special categories for catching fish from paddle boards or kayaks. There are also exciting "Shark Saturdays" where people weigh in huge sharks caught during the tournament!
How the Rodeo Helps Destin
The Destin Fishing Rodeo is a really important event for the local community. It brings a lot of money into the town. For example, in 2006, over 36,000 anglers (fishermen and women) from many different states and countries came to participate. This brought about $5.2 million in revenue to Destin! It helps local businesses like restaurants, hotels, and shops.
Fishing Categories and Rules
The Destin Fishing Rodeo has different groups for everyone. There are divisions for juniors, teens, ladies, and seniors. Prizes are given out every day, every week, and for the overall winners of the whole month!
The types of fish you can catch and win prizes for can change each year. This is because of fishing rules from the government. A special group called the Rules Committee meets every year. They make sure all the rules for anglers (the people fishing) and the fish they catch are fair. There are more than 75 rules for the rodeo, but here are three main ones:
Main Rodeo Rules
- Anglers must tell the weigh-in staff which division they are entering when they bring their fish to be weighed.
- Anglers cannot win more than one main award for the same fish. (But they can win bonus or jackpot awards too!)
- The Destin Fishing Rodeo Rules Committee makes all the final decisions about who can fish and which fish are eligible.
Daily Weigh-Ins
One of the most exciting parts of the Destin Fishing Rodeo is the daily weigh-ins! These happen every day from 11 AM to 7 PM CST. You can find them behind AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar, right on the Destin Harbor.
There's a huge leaderboard displayed right next to the weigh-in dock. It shows all the different categories and is updated every day with the biggest fish caught. If you want to watch the action, there's even a small grandstand where you can sit and cheer!
