The Detroit Windsor International Film Festival (DWIFF) was a special event for movie lovers. It took place every June from 2008 to 2012. The festival happened in both Detroit, Michigan, in the United States, and Windsor, Ontario, in Canada. It was a unique way to celebrate films across two countries!
The DWIFF worked closely with Wayne State University. The university even brought its own student film festival into the DWIFF. Many of the festival's activities were held right on Wayne State's campus in Detroit.

Cool Events at the Festival
Like many film festivals, the DWIFF showed all kinds of movies. These ranged from films made by students to big Hollywood productions. But the DWIFF was also known for its special events. These events were a big part of the festival from the very beginning.
The DWIFF Challenge: Make a Movie in 48 Hours!
Imagine making a short movie in just two days! That's what the DWIFF Challenge was all about. It was similar to another contest called the 48 Hour Film Project.
Teams got a specific movie type, like comedy or mystery. They also received a character, a prop (like a special item), and a line of dialogue they had to use. Then, they had only 48 hours to create a short film with all those elements. After the movies were finished, judges picked the best ones. These winning films were then shown at a special screening during the festival.
Tech Fair: Explore New Technology
The DWIFF Tech Fair was held at Wayne State University. It was a great place to see the newest technology. Visitors could also take "how-to" classes. These classes taught people about everything from using personal electronics to making their own movies. It was a fun way to learn about the world of film and tech!
MovingMedia: A Festival for Student Films
MovingMedia was the official film festival for Wayne State University. It started in 2001. In 2009, MovingMedia joined forces with the DWIFF. This partnership made the festival even bigger and better!
Getting a film into MovingMedia was not easy; it was very selective. There was a competition where judges picked the best films, and winners received prizes. The festival was open to students from local areas, across the country, and even from other countries.
MovingMedia featured films in six different types:
- Narrative (story-based films)
- Documentary (films about real events or people)
- Music Video
- Experimental (films that try new and unusual ideas)
- Animation (cartoon films)
- New Media (films that use new digital technologies)
In 2012, high school students were also invited to submit their films. The MovingMedia festival usually took place in June, as part of the larger DWIFF.
