Devonian Gardens is a huge indoor park. It is also a botanical garden filled with plants. You can find it in the heart of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In 2012, the park had a big $37-million makeover.

This special park is located on the Stephen Avenue walking street. It is completely covered in glass. The park is about 2.5 acres, which is like one whole city block. You'll find it on the top floor of The Core Shopping Centre. The City of Calgary Parks takes care of this amazing space.

Inside Devonian Gardens, you can see a "living wall" made of plants. There are also koi fish ponds and beautiful fountains. Kids can enjoy a fun play area. The gardens are home to over 550 trees. It also has spaces for special events.

History of Devonian Gardens

Devonian Gardens first opened in 1977. It was designed by J.H. Cook Architects and Engineers. The Devonian Group of Charitable Foundations and Calford Properties gave it to the City of Calgary. Building the gardens cost 9 million Canadian dollars.

Original Design and Features

The first gardens had more than 20,000 plants. These plants came from 135 different tropical and local types. The park was decorated with waterfalls and bridges. It also had koi ponds and art from local artists.

Major Renovations and Reopening

In 2008, the shopping center below the park started a big renovation. Because of this, Devonian Gardens had to close for four years. The changes included making the mall below wider and taller. A long skylight was also added above the park.

The gardens reopened on June 27, 2012. After the renovation, it had more seating for the food court. A new playground was added. There was also more space for events. In 2016, the park closed again for a short time. This was to fix some leaks.
