The History of Dewey
The community of Dewey and its post office were started in 1876. When they first began, both the town and the post office were named Behrens. This name was chosen to honor Henry Behrens, who owned the land where the town was built.
Around the same time, a railroad company called the Havana, Rantoul and Eastern Railroad built a train station there. However, they named their station Dewey. This was in honor of Milo C. Dewey, who was an investor in the railroad.
Because of the train station's name, the post office changed its name to Dewey in 1878. After that, the entire community became known as Dewey.
