Dhanteras (which means "wealth" and "thirteenth day") is a special Hindu festival. It marks the very first day of the big Diwali festival in India. It is also the start of the Tihar festival in Nepal.
This day is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of the "dark fortnight" (Krishna Paksha) in the Hindu month of Ashwin. People celebrate Dhanteras by praying for good health and wealth.
Who is Dhanvantari?
On Dhanteras, people also worship Dhanvantari. He is known as the god of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of medicine.
Dhanvantari is believed to have shared the knowledge of Ayurveda with humans. He helped people find relief from sickness using natural remedies. This makes him very important for health and well-being.
National Ayurveda Day
Because Dhanvantari is so important to Ayurveda, the Indian government decided to honor him. The Ministry of AYUSH (which stands for Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) announced a special day.
They decided to observe Dhanteras as "National Ayurveda Day." This day was first celebrated on October 28, 2016. It helps people remember the value of traditional Indian medicine.
