About Dhirendra Mehta's Life
Dhirendra Mehta was born in Ahmedabad, India, on August 29, 1944. His family came from Bhuj. When he was four years old, he got poliomyelitis, which affected both his legs.
He finished high school in 1961 at Alfred High School, Bhuj. He then studied Gujarati language and literature. He earned his B.A. degree in 1966 and his M.A. degree in 1968 from Gujarat University. Later, in 1976, he earned a Ph.D. for his study on Gujarati novels.
Dhirendra Mehta worked as a teacher for many years. He taught Gujarati literature at Gujarat College in Ahmedabad. Later, he moved to Bhuj and taught at R. R. Lalan College until he retired in 2006. He also taught as a visiting professor at Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kachchh University.
His Books and Writings
Dhirendra Mehta has written many different kinds of books. His first novel, Valay, came out in 1971. It explored feelings like love, relationships, and sometimes sadness. His other early novels, Chihna (1978) and Adrashya (1980), also looked at similar topics.
Kaveri Ane Darpanlok (1988) is a book with two shorter novels. These stories were first written as radio plays. Ghar (1995) has four stories about home and how things change, even death. Some of his other novels include Dishantar, Apane Loko, Dharna (1990), Khovai Gayeli Vastu (2001), Bhandari Bhavan (2002), and Chhavni (2006). He often writes about feelings of loneliness and sadness in his works.
Stories and Poems
Sanmukh (1985) is a collection of 26 short stories. He has other story collections too, like Atlu Badhu Sukh and Hu Ene Jou E Pahela.
Dhirendra Mehta also writes poetry. Pavanna Veshma (1955) is a collection of 119 poems he wrote over many years. Pratyanchano Kamp is another one of his poetry books.
Other Writings
His Ph.D. study was published as a book called Nandshankarthi Umashankar (1984). He also wrote a short biography of Dr. Jayant Khatri in 1977. He has written many critical essays, where he shares his thoughts on other books and writers. Some of these are Nisbat (1990) and Morchangna Soor (1995).
He has also edited several books, including Ranni Ankhma Dariyo (1986), which is a collection of stories from Kutch. For younger readers, he wrote Bhuskani Ujani (1986), a collection of children's poetry. His memoir, Mehtaji, Tame Eva Shu?, shares stories from his own life.
Awards and Honors
Dhirendra Mehta has received many awards for his writing. These include the R. V. Desai Award (1994), the Critics Award (1985), and the Darshak Award (2003). He has also been honored by the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad and the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi.
In 2010, he received the very important Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Chhavni. This award is one of India's highest literary honors. In 2011, he was given the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, which is the highest award in Gujarati literature.
Family Life
Dhirendra Mehta married Nutanben in 1977. They have two daughters named Venu and Shalmali.
