The Dhofar Liberation Front (DLF) was a group formed in 1965. Its goal was to create a separate state in Dhofar. Dhofar is a southern region of Oman. It shares a border with South Yemen.

What Was the Dhofar Liberation Front?

The Dhofar Liberation Front, or DLF, was started by young people in Salalah. They believed in a political idea called communism. The group was formed in 1965.

Why Was the DLF Formed?

The main goal of the DLF was to help Dhofar develop. They wanted to get money and resources for the area. Another big aim was to end the rule of the Sultan of Muscat and Oman. At that time, the Sultan was Said bin Taimur.

Key Leaders of the DLF

Two important leaders were central to the DLF's early history. They were Musallam bin Nufl and Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah. They helped guide the group during its time.

The Conflict in Dhofar

The DLF, with support from South Yemen, fought a long conflict. This fight lasted for about 10 years. They were fighting against the Sultan of Oman's army. This conflict is known as the Dhofar Rebellion.

The Sultan's army also had help. They were supported by countries like Iran and the United Kingdom. By 1976, the Sultan's forces were successful. They pushed the DLF fighters back. The DLF forces were moved towards the border with Yemen and into the mountains.
