The Story of Dialville
How Dialville Began
The land where Dialville is located was first settled in the late 1840s. The community itself started in 1883. That's when John Dial opened a store along the Kansas and Short Gulf Line Railroad. The place was first called "Dial."
In 1885, a post office opened in Dialville, but it closed a year later. It reopened in 1897 when John Thomas Bailey started a new store. Dialville was an important stop on the railroad.
Growing and Changing
Around 1900, a man named C.D. Jarrett moved to Dialville. He helped turn the community into a place where farmers could ship their crops. These crops included tomatoes and peaches.
By 1915, Dialville had grown to 400 people. It had two churches, a bank, and its own newspaper called the Dialville News. The next year, a theater opened, and another newspaper, the Dialville Reporter, started up.
Later Years
After 1916, Dialville began to get smaller. By the early 1930s, it had lost half of its population. Many stores and businesses closed down. By the late 1980s, only two churches and one store remained. In 2000, the population was still 200, with three businesses.
John Dial and his wife, Ida Mae Jones, gave 8 acres (about 3.2 hectares) of their land for the railroad depot. Today, Dialville is still an important part of Cherokee County's farming history.
