Diana Hendry was born in the Wirral, England. She grew up with two brothers or sisters. For a while, she worked as a journalist, writing for newspapers and working in radio. One of her jobs was at The Western Mail newspaper in Cardiff from 1960 to 1965.

When she was 39 years old, Diana went to the University of Bristol to get a degree. She was lucky because her professor's wife was a famous author named Diana Wynne Jones.
