Diana Williams (born July 18, 1958) is a TV journalist who used to tell people the news. She worked at WABC television in New York City. There, she helped host the 5 p.m. news show called Eyewitness News. She also hosted a Sunday morning show called Eyewitness News Up Close with Diana Williams, which talked about important community topics.

Her Life and Career

Williams finished college at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, in 1980. She studied economics there.

After getting some experience at WTVD in Durham, Williams started her TV career. She worked as a reporter at WSOC in Charlotte, North Carolina. Later, she became a news anchor for the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. shows at WBTV. From 1987 to 1991, she worked at WNEV (now WHDH) in Boston, Massachusetts.

Working at WABC

Williams joined WABC in 1991 as a reporter. Soon, she started anchoring the news on weekends. Within a year, she was helping to host the station's 11 p.m. Eyewitness News show with Bill Beutel. In 1999, Williams also joined Beutel for the 6 p.m. news. She was the first person to co-anchor the 6 p.m. news with him since 1986.

Starting in 1999, she co-anchored the 11 p.m. news with Bill Ritter. Then, in 2001, she also started doing the 6 p.m. news with him after Bill Beutel retired. Williams joined the 5 p.m. news in 2003. She first worked with Roz Abrams, and later with Sade Baderinwa.

She traveled the world to report for Eyewitness News. She went to places like Ireland and Israel to cover important events. She also traveled with Pope John Paul II many times. A special trip was his important visit to Israel in 2000. Williams also went with the Pope to Baltimore, Mexico City, and Toronto. She reported on the September 11 attacks and for its tenth anniversary in 2011.

Williams also reported a lot about politics. She covered the events around New York Governor Eliot Spitzer in 2008. She reported on the elections of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2001, 2005, and 2009. She also covered New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's election in 2009. She went to every big meeting where U.S. presidential candidates are chosen. This started with the 1992 Democratic National Convention in New York City.

She won an Emmy Award for a special show she made called Dangerous Crossings. This show looked at issues with people crossing the border between Mexico and Arizona. She also won awards for her yearly shows about breast cancer. For over 17 years, she helped host the "Making Strides against Breast Cancer" Walk for the American Cancer Society.

After 29 years, Williams announced on TV that she was retiring. Her last news show was on September 12, 2019.
