Diaperia prolifera, also known as big-head rabbit-tobacco, is a type of plant found in the central United States. It grows in dry, open places, from states like Montana all the way down to Alabama.
What is Big-Head Rabbit-Tobacco?
Diaperia prolifera is a small plant that lives for about one year. It grows up to 15 centimeters (6 inches) tall. This plant looks grayish-green or silvery. That's because it has thick, woolly hairs covering it.
Plant Parts and Appearance
The stem of the plant branches out above the ground. Its leaves can be up to 15 millimeters long. The plant's flower heads usually grow one at a time. Sometimes, you might see them in small groups of two or three.
Different Kinds of Big-Head Rabbit-Tobacco
Scientists have found two main types, or varieties, of Diaperia prolifera. These varieties often blend into each other where their growing areas overlap. This happens especially in Texas and Oklahoma.
- Diaperia prolifera var. prolifera: This type is usually grayish to green. You can find it in many states. These include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
- Diaperia prolifera var. barnebyi: This type has a silvery-white color. It grows in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
