Dichichthys is a special group, or genus, of sharks. These sharks are also known as bristle sharks. They are the only genus in their entire family, called Dichichthyidae. This means they are quite unique!

You can find these interesting sharks living in the waters of the Western Pacific Ocean. For a long time, scientists thought these five species belonged to a different shark group, the Parmaturus genus. However, after carefully studying their bodies and features, scientists confirmed that Dichichthys sharks are distinct enough to have their very own family.

Discovering the Unique Bristle Sharks

Scientists are always learning new things about the ocean and its creatures. When they discover a new animal, they give it a scientific name. This helps everyone around the world know exactly which animal they are talking about. The genus Dichichthys was first described by W. L. Chan in 1966.

Recently, in 2024, scientists like White, Stewart, O'Neill, and Naylor helped confirm the unique place of these sharks. They studied the sharks' bodies very closely. This detailed study helped them understand why Dichichthys needed its own special family.

What Makes Bristle Sharks Special?

One of the key features that sets Dichichthys apart is something called "supraorbital crests." These are special bony ridges found above their eyes on their skull. Their skull is made of cartilage, which is a flexible material, not hard bone like ours.

These crests are like unique fingerprints for these sharks. They help scientists tell Dichichthys apart from other similar catshark groups and families. It's a small detail, but it's very important for classifying them correctly!

Meet the Bristle Shark Species

There are five recognized species within the Dichichthys genus. Each one is a fascinating part of the ocean's biodiversity. Here are the species that make up this unique family:

  • Dichichthys albimarginatus (Séret & Last, 2007) (Whitetip bristle shark)
  • Dichichthys bigus (Séret & Last, 2007) (Beige bristle shark)
  • Dichichthys melanobranchus (W. L. Chan, 1966) (Blackgill catshark)
  • Dichichthys nigripalatum (Fahmi & Ebert, 2018) (Indonesian filetail catshark)
  • Dichichthys satoi (White, Stewart, O'Neill & Naylor, 2024) (Roughback bristle shark)
