Dick Cole, born on April 6, 1967, is a politician from Cornwall. He is a member of the Cornwall Council and leads a political party called Mebyon Kernow. He has been the leader of Mebyon Kernow since 1997, making him one of the longest-serving political leaders in Britain.

Early Life and Education

Dick Cole grew up in Cornwall, near a place called Goss Moor. He went to school at Treviglas School in Newquay and later studied at the University of Wales, Lampeter.

Starting in Politics

Before becoming the leader of Mebyon Kernow in 1997, Dick Cole worked as the party's press officer for five years. While he was at university, he also supported another political party called Plaid Cymru in Wales.

In 1999, Dick Cole was elected to the local council for Restormel, representing the area of St Enoder. He served on this council until it was changed in 2009.

Serving Cornwall Council

In 2009, a new council for all of Cornwall was created, called Cornwall Council. Dick Cole ran for election to this new council. He won the election for the St Enoder area with a very high percentage of the votes.

He also ran in the general election in 2005 for the North Cornwall area. In 2010 and 2015, he was a candidate for Mebyon Kernow in the St Austell and Newquay area.

Community Involvement

Dick Cole lives in Fraddon, in the middle of Cornwall. He is active in his local community.

  • He is a member of the parish council for St Enoder.
  • He is a governor at Summercourt Primary School.
  • He is also a trustee for the Fraddon Millennium Green and the Indian Queens Pit.

Leadership and Advocacy

On the Cornwall Council, Dick Cole leads the Mebyon Kernow political group. He also chairs a group that advises on planning policies. He represents the council in a national group called the County Councils Network Special Interest Group.

Dick Cole has spoken out about important local issues. He has talked about the incinerator in St Dennis and plans to build many new homes in an "eco-town." He also led a group to 10 Downing Street to give a petition with 50,000 signatures from Cornwall. This petition asked for a vote on creating a special assembly for Cornwall, similar to how other parts of the UK have their own assemblies.
