Dirk "Dick" Jacobus Willem Nanninga (born January 17, 1949 – died July 21, 2015) was a famous Dutch footballer. He played as an attacking midfielder for several clubs in the Netherlands, including BV Veendam, Roda JC, and MVV Maastricht. He also played briefly for a club in Hong Kong. Dick Nanninga is best known for scoring an important goal for the Netherlands in the 1978 FIFA World Cup final.

Dick Nanninga: A Football Star
Dick Nanninga was a well-known football player from the Netherlands. He was born in Groningen and became famous for his strong attacking skills on the field. He played for different teams and also represented his country in major tournaments.
Playing for Different Clubs
Dick Nanninga started his professional football career in 1973 with BV Veendam. He played there for one season, scoring 15 goals in 31 games. This was a great start to his career.
After Veendam, he moved to Roda JC in 1974. This was where he spent most of his career, playing for eight years until 1982. At Roda JC, Nanninga was a very important player. He scored 107 goals in 225 matches, which is a fantastic record for any footballer.

The 1978 World Cup Goal
One of his most famous moments was during the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. The Netherlands team made it all the way to the final, where they played against the host country, Argentina.
In that exciting final match, Dick Nanninga scored a crucial goal. He scored the equalizing goal, making the score 1–1 during normal playing time. This goal gave the Netherlands a chance to win the World Cup. However, Argentina eventually won the game 3–1 after extra time. Later Life and Health
After his football career, Dick Nanninga faced some health challenges. In 2012, he went into a coma and woke up five months later. Due to a condition called diabetes, he had to have his left lower leg removed. Later, in 2014, his right lower leg also had to be removed. Dick Nanninga passed away on July 21, 2015. He is remembered as a talented footballer and a hero for his country.
