Didukh facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A didukh (Ukrainian: дідух, pronounced dee-dookh) is a special Ukrainian Christmas decoration. It's made from a bundle of wheat stalks, like a small sheaf. This decoration is a symbol of the autumn harvest and a way to thank nature.

The word "didukh" means "grandfather spirit." It reminds people of their ancestors and the good things from the past.

Didukhy are usually made from the very first or last wheat stalks gathered during the harvest. They show a family's hope for lots of good things and a great harvest in the coming year. Before the holidays, wheat stalks are gathered with colorful threads and tied with ribbons. A didukh is placed in most Ukrainian homes before Christmas and stays there until Masnytsia.

What is the Spiritual Meaning of a Didukh?

Many people believe that the spirits of a family's ancestors live in the didukh during the holidays. When the didukh is placed in a special spot in the home, it's thought that all the ancestors' souls come together to bless the family.

How is a Didukh Used During Christmas?

On Sviat Vechir, which is Christmas Eve in Ukraine, the hospodar (the head of the household) brings the didukh into the house. It is placed in the pokutia, which is a special corner of the house where icons (religious images) are kept.

Along with the didukh, families also place kutia (a traditional ritual food) and uzvar (a ritual drink) in this honored spot. These items are all part of the special Christmas traditions.

When is the Didukh Removed?

The didukh stays in the home throughout the Christmas season. On Masnytsia, which is a holiday marking the end of winter, the didukh is traditionally burned. Burning it symbolizes the end of winter and the welcoming of spring.
