Diego Sebastián Laxalt Suárez is a professional football player from Uruguay. He was born on February 7, 1993. He usually plays as a defensive midfielder for Russian Premier League club Dynamo Moscow in Russia. He also plays for the Uruguay national team. For most of his career, he played as a left-back. Starting at Defensor Sporting
Diego Laxalt was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He began his professional football career on September 1, 2012. His first game was with Defensor Sporting against Montevideo Wanderers, which his team won 4–0. He played 15 games and scored 1 goal in his first season.
Time with Inter Milan
Loans to Bologna and Empoli
Inter Milan bought Laxalt in January 2013. However, he did not play for Inter Milan right away. Instead, he was loaned out to other teams. For the 2013–14 season, he played on loan for Bologna. The next season, in 2014–15, he was loaned to Empoli.
Playing for Genoa
In January 2015, Laxalt joined Genoa on a loan deal. He scored his first two goals for Genoa in October 2015 against Torino. In July 2016, Genoa signed him permanently. He played many games for Genoa, becoming an important player for the team.
Moving to AC Milan
Debut Season and Loans
On August 16, 2018, Diego Laxalt joined AC Milan, another big club in Italy. He made his first appearance for AC Milan on August 25, 2018.
In August 2019, he was loaned to Torino for a season. He returned to AC Milan in January 2020. Later, in October 2020, he was loaned to Celtic, a Scottish club, for the season. He scored his first goal for Celtic in November 2020. He also helped Celtic win the 2020 Scottish Cup Final, which was his first major trophy.
Joining Dynamo Moscow
Early Seasons and Injuries
On June 22, 2021, Laxalt signed a three-year contract with Dynamo Moscow in Russia. His first two seasons with Dynamo were tough because he had several injuries. These injuries affected his hip, thigh, and knee, which meant he couldn't play many games in a row.
Strong Performances and Contract Extension
In the 2023–24 season, Dynamo's new coach, Marcel Lička, started playing Laxalt as a defensive midfielder. This change worked very well. Laxalt was chosen as the player of the month by Dynamo fans in July and August 2023. On August 6, 2023, he helped Dynamo win an away game against Zenit Saint Petersburg, which was a big victory for the team.
Because of his great performances, Laxalt extended his contract with Dynamo Moscow in October 2023. His contract now runs until June 2026, with an option to extend it even further.
Recent Season
The 2024–25 season has also seen Laxalt deal with injuries. This has limited his time playing consistently in the starting lineup.
International Career
Playing for Uruguay's Youth Team
Diego Laxalt played for the Uruguay U20 team. He made his debut in the 2013 South American Youth Championship in Argentina. He scored his first goal for the U20 team against Brazil. His team finished second in their group.
He also played in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. Uruguay did very well in this tournament, reaching the final. They finished as runners-up, which was a great achievement for the team.
Playing for the Senior National Team
Laxalt was called up to the main Uruguay squad in 2016. He made his full debut for the senior team in June 2017. In May 2018, he was chosen to be part of Uruguay's team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
