Diego Novelli's Political Journey
Diego Novelli started his political career in the city of Turin. He became a member of the city council in 1960. This was his first step into public service.
Mayor of Turin
In 1975, Novelli was elected as the Mayor of Turin. He had the support of two big political parties at the time, the Italian Communist Party and the Italian Socialist Party. He stayed in this important role for ten years, until 1985. His time as mayor was during a period of many social and political changes in Italy.
National and European Roles
After being mayor, Diego Novelli continued his work in politics. From 1984 to 1987, he was a member of the European Parliament. This means he helped make decisions for countries across Europe.
In 1987, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. This is like being a member of parliament in Italy. He served in this role for many years, until 2001.
Starting a New Party
Later, the Italian Communist Party changed its direction. Diego Novelli then helped create a new political party called The Network (LR). He worked with another politician named Leoluca Orlando to start this party.
In 1993, Novelli tried to become mayor of Turin again. He was supported by his new party, The Network, and another party called the Communist Refoundation Party. He did well in the first round of voting, but he was not elected in the final round.
Later Political Activities
In 2009, Diego Novelli ran for the European Parliament again with a party called Left Ecology and Freedom. However, he was not elected that time. In 2011, he was chosen to be the president of the provincial committee of ANPI. This is an organization that remembers and honors those who fought against fascism in Italy.
