Diego Álvarez de Osorio (born 1485 – died May 1536) was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He was chosen to be the very first Bishop of Nicaragua. He served in this role from 1531 until his death in 1536.
Life of Diego Álvarez de Osorio
Diego Álvarez de Osorio was born in 1485. While some old records say he was born in Darien, Panama, this is thought to be unlikely. Other information suggests he arrived in Panama in 1528. There, he worked as a canon (a type of priest who helps run a cathedral).
Becoming Bishop of Nicaragua
On February 26, 1531, a very important event happened for Diego Álvarez de Osorio. During the time of Pope Clement VII, he was chosen to be the Bishop of Nicaragua. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church.
Even though he was chosen, he was never officially consecrated (a special ceremony that makes someone a bishop). So, he was known as the Bishop-Elect of Nicaragua. He served in this important position until he passed away in May 1536, at the age of 51, in León, Nicaragua.
