Life of Bishop Diepold
Early Life and Family
Diepold von Berg was born around the year 1140. His father was Diepold von Berg-Schelklingen, and his mother was Gisela von Andechs. Diepold came from an important family.
He had several brothers who also played big roles in church history. His older brother, Heinrich, and his younger brother, Manegold, were both important in the Diocese of Passau. Another brother, Otto II von Berg, became the Bishop of Freising.
Becoming Bishop
On June 10, 1172, Diepold became a priest. Later that year, on November 23, he was chosen to be the new Bishop of Passau. This happened because Frederick Barbarossa, who was the Emperor at the time, wanted him to be bishop. Pope Alexander III also agreed to this choice.
Diepold took over from his own brother, Heinrich von Berg, who had been the bishop before him.
Important Meetings and Challenges
In 1178, Bishop Diepold took part in a church meeting called a synod in Hohenau, near the Inn River. A synod is a meeting of church leaders to discuss important matters.
The next year, in 1179, he traveled all the way to Rome. There, he attended a very important meeting called the third Lateran Council. This was a major gathering of church leaders from across Europe.
When he returned to Passau, he faced a big challenge: a fire had badly damaged the city in 1181. Bishop Diepold worked very hard to help rebuild the Passau Cathedral and the bishop's residence, which is where the bishop lived.
The Third Crusade and Death
In 1189, Bishop Diepold joined Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa on a major journey. They went on the Third Crusade, which was a large military expedition to the Holy Land. The goal of the crusades was to take back control of holy places.
Sadly, Bishop Diepold died in November 1190 during this journey. He passed away along with six canons (priests who serve in a cathedral) from the Passau Cathedral. They died in the camp near the city of Acre, during the siege of Acre. Bishop Diepold was buried in the Holy Land.
