The Story of Diet Rite
Diet Rite first came out in 1955. It was originally made for people on special diets. By 1962, it was sold all over the United States. It was marketed as a healthy drink for everyone.
Changing Sweeteners Over Time
The first Diet Rite used special ingredients called cyclamate and saccharin to make it sweet. These are artificial sweeteners. In 1969, cyclamate was no longer allowed in drinks. So, Diet Rite removed it from their recipe.
Later, a new sweetener called aspartame (known as NutraSweet) was added. By 1987, all the saccharin was replaced with aspartame. At this time, Diet Rite also removed all caffeine from its drinks.
In the 1990s, Diet Rite started making new flavors. They added several fruit-flavored drinks to their lineup.
New Sweeteners and Flavors
In 2000, Diet Rite changed its recipe again. They replaced aspartame with new sweeteners. These were sucralose (known as Splenda) and acesulfame potassium (known as Sunnet). This made Diet Rite the first big diet soda in the U.S. to not use aspartame or saccharin.
In 2005, the name was updated to "Pure Zero." A new cherry cola flavor was also introduced in 2006.
Today, the company Keurig Dr Pepper owns and sells Diet Rite.
Advertising Diet Rite
In the early 1960s, a music group called The Paris Sisters sang a jingle for a Diet Rite TV commercial. A jingle is a short, catchy song used in ads. Their song had a line that said, "Stay thin with the best-tasting cola of all!"
