Dieter Kottysch (born June 30, 1943 – died April 9, 2017) was a German boxer. He was an amateur middleweight boxer. He became famous for winning a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games. He represented West Germany in two Olympic Games, in 1968 and 1972.

His First Olympic Games: Mexico City 1968
Dieter Kottysch first competed in the Olympic Games in 1968. These games were held in Mexico City. He was a welterweight boxer at that time.
In his first fight, he won against Mauri Saarivainio from Finland. The referee stopped the contest. This means Dieter was clearly winning the match. However, in the next round, he faced Vladimir Musalimov from the Soviet Union. Dieter lost this fight by decision. This meant the judges decided Vladimir won. So, Dieter's journey in the 1968 Olympics ended early.
Winning Gold: Munich 1972 Olympics
Four years later, Dieter Kottysch competed again in the Olympic Games. This time, the games were in Munich, West Germany, in 1972. He competed as a light middleweight boxer. This was his chance to win a medal.
Dieter had a strong performance in Munich. He did not have to fight in the first round. In the next round, he defeated Bonifaciio Avila from Colombia. He won with a technical knockout in the second round. This means the referee stopped the fight because Bonifaciio could not continue safely.
Dieter continued to win his matches. He beat Evengelos Oikonomakos from Greece on points. This means the judges scored more points for Dieter. He also defeated Mohamed Majeri from Tunisia on points.
In the semifinal, Dieter faced Alan Minter from Great Britain. It was a very close fight. Dieter won on points with a score of 3-2. This victory sent him to the final match.
The final was against Wieslaw Rudkowski from Poland. This was another very close and exciting fight. Dieter Kottysch won on points with a score of 3-2. This victory earned him the gold medal! It was a proud moment for him and for West Germany.
