Diezma is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the province of Granada. This province is part of Andalusia, a large region in southern Spain.
Diezma is special because of its location. It sits right between the beautiful Sierra de Huétor Natural Park and a new water reservoir called Francisco Abellan.
History of Diezma
Diezma has a long and interesting history, going back thousands of years. People have lived here for a very long time.
Ancient Times
The name "Diezma" might come from the time of the Roman Empire. Some historians believe it was a place where travelers could rest. This was especially true for those traveling on the Via Augusta, an important Roman road. This road connected ancient cities like Acci (modern-day Guadix) and Iliberis (near modern-day Granada).
Later, when the Muslims ruled Spain, Diezma became a farming area. People grew crops and raised animals here.
From Conquest to Today
Diezma faced many attacks over the years. First, it was attacked by the Zirids, a powerful Muslim group. Then, knights from Alfonso VI of Castile, a Christian king, also raided the area.
Finally, the Catholic Monarchs of Spain conquered the region. In 1536, a man named Luis Guiral bought Diezma from the Crown of Castile. He became the Mayorazgo of Diezma, which meant he was the main landowner and had special rights.
In the 20th century, Diezma was a busy stop for travelers. It was on the main road connecting Granada to other big cities like Murcia and Almería. People would often stop there for a break.
Today, Diezma is a quiet town again. Its people mostly focus on farming. They grow delicious olives and cherries. The town is also known for producing anise, a spice, and for preserving its cherries in a special way.
