Dinanath Gopal Tendulkar (1909–1972) was an Indian writer and filmmaker. He is most famous for writing a huge, eight-book series about Mahatma Gandhi. This series was called Mahatma: Life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He also worked with Vithalbhai Jhaveri on a documentary film about Gandhi. The film was titled Mahatma: Life of Gandhi, 1869–1948. Tendulkar passed away on June 12, 1972.
Early Life and Learning
D. G. Tendulkar was born in 1909 in Ratnagiri, which is in Maharashtra, India. Back then, this area was known as the Bombay Presidency. He went to some very good universities for his education. He studied first at the University of Cambridge in England. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Marburg and the University of Göttingen in Germany.
A Famous Writer
Tendulkar became well-known around the world for his amazing work. He wrote an eight-volume biography about Mahatma Gandhi. This huge book series was called Mahatma: Life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. It was first published in 1951. The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, even wrote the introduction for it.
Tendulkar was offered a special award called the Padma Bhushan. This is one of the highest awards a civilian can receive in India. The President of India, Rajendra Prasad, offered him this honor. However, Tendulkar politely turned down the award. Instead, he asked for a watch, and he received one!
He also wrote another important book in 1967. This book was a biography of Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, titled Faith is a Battle. It is one of the few books written about Gaffar Khan's life. In 1957, when the National Book Trust of India was first created, Tendulkar was asked to be a member.
Some of his other books include 30 months in Russia (published in 1943). He also wrote Gandhi in Champaran (published in 1957) and Soviet Sanskriti. Besides writing his own books, he also helped edit others. He edited Jawaharlal Nehru in pictures (1967) and Gandhiji: His life and works (1944).
Pioneer in Filmmaking
D. G. Tendulkar was not just a writer; he was also a documentary filmmaker. He learned how to make films from a famous director named Sergei Eisenstein in Moscow. Tendulkar, along with P. V. Pathy and K. S. Hirlekar, are considered pioneers. This means they were among the first important people to make documentary films in India.
