St Dingat's Church, Dingestow

Dingad, also known as Dingat, was an important Welsh saint from the late 400s. He was an early Christian leader who helped start churches in Wales.

Who Was Saint Dingad?

This saint is mentioned in old Welsh documents. These papers tell us he was a son of King Brychan. King Brychan ruled a Welsh kingdom called Brycheiniog. This kingdom was located in southeastern Wales.

Churches Connected to Dingad

Saint Dingad is known as the patron saint of two churches. One is Llandingat Church, found in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire. The other is Dingestow, a village in Monmouthshire. Being a "patron" means he was a special protector or founder of these places. Sometimes, people suggest that the church in Dingestow might be named after a different person. This other person is called Dingad ap Nudd Hael. He was known as the 'King of Brynbuga' (which is now Usk in Monmouthshire).
