Dinglewood is a cool neighborhood in Columbus, Georgia. It's located at the southern edge of the city's Midtown area. You can find the tallest building in Columbus here, which is the Aflac Tower.

Dinglewood is also famous for the Dinglewood Pharmacy. Many people in the city say this pharmacy serves the very best "scrambled hot dog"! The neighborhood's borders are generally 17th Street to the north, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the south, Interstate 185 to the east, and Veterans Parkway to the west. Back in 2007, about 1,101 people lived in this area.

Part of Dinglewood is also known as the Dinglewood Historic District. This is a special area that was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2001. It means the buildings and area are important to history and are protected. The neighborhood also includes Dinglewood House, a historic home at 1429 Dinglewood Avenue, which is also listed on the National Register. Plus, there's Dinglewood Park, a nice green space for everyone to enjoy.

Exploring the Dinglewood Historic District

The Dinglewood Historic District is a small, mostly residential area. It includes the old Dinglewood house, which was built around 1859. You'll also find many homes built in the early 1900s here. In the center of the district, there's a circular park that is privately owned, and a city-owned park too.

The district grew up around Dinglewood House. This house is a two-story building designed in the Italianate style. This style often features low-pitched roofs, wide eaves, and tall, narrow windows. It was designed by architects Barringer and Morton for Colonel Joel Early Hurt. The original property was quite large, about 30 acres. In the early 1900s, this big estate was divided into smaller lots. Between 1917 and 1951, sixteen new houses were built there.

Popular House Styles in Dinglewood

The houses in the Dinglewood Historic District show off many different architectural styles. Some common ones include Georgian, Bungalow, Ranch, Colonial Revival, English Vernacular Revival, and Spanish Colonial Revival.

Colonial Revival Homes

The Colonial Revival style was very popular. It brought back designs from early American colonial times. Two examples in Dinglewood were designed by a local architect named John C. Martin Jr..

  • One house, built around 1924, is a two-story brick home. It has a balanced front with a half-round porch. This porch has fluted columns and a fancy entrance with a fanlight (a window shaped like a fan above the door).
  • Another house, built around 1928, is not perfectly balanced. It has flat columns called pilasters and a doorway with a "broken pediment" (a triangular top that is open in the middle).
  • Another Colonial Revival house, built around 1917, has Doric columns on its porch. It also has a porte cochere, which is a covered entrance where vehicles can drive through to drop off people.

Tudor Revival Homes

You can also see several Tudor Revival style homes in Dinglewood. This style often looks like old English cottages with steep roofs, tall chimneys, and decorative half-timbering.

  • Two Tudor houses were also designed by John C. Martin, Jr. One was built around 1927 and another around 1919.
  • Other Tudor-style homes can be found on West Dinglewood Drive and Dinglewood Drive.

Another architect from Columbus, Frederick Roy Duncan, also designed buildings in this historic district.
