Dino Melaye (born 7 January 1974) is a Nigerian lawyer and politician. He served as a Senator representing the Kogi West Senatorial district. He was also a member of the House of Representatives.

Melaye is from Ayetoro Gbede in the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In 2015, he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) but later returned to the PDP before the 2019 elections. He led the Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja and briefly the Senate Committee on Aviation. He was also the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, a presidential candidate for the People's Democratic Party in 2023.

Early Life and Education

Dino Melaye was born in Kano State, Nigeria. He went to Abdulaziz Attah Memorial College, Okene, for his secondary school education. In 2000, he graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied geography.

During his time as a student, he led the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Later, he became the Secretary-General of the African Youth Council. He also served as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Youth Council. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him to lead the Presidential Advisory Council on Youths.

Political Career Highlights

In 2015, Dino Melaye was re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives. He represented the Kabba/Ijumu federal constituency. Later that year, in the Senatorial election, he was elected to the Senate of Nigeria. He represented the Kogi-West district.

He supported the nomination of Senator Bukola Saraki to become the President of the Senate. Melaye was re-elected on 23 February 2019 to serve in the 9th Senate. However, his election was challenged by Smart Adeyemi of the APC.

On 23 August 2019, a tribunal removed Melaye from his seat and ordered a new election. After some disagreements, Senator Dino Melaye lost his appeal on 11 October 2019. The INEC then ordered a re-run election. This election was held on 30 November 2019.

In the re-run election, Senator Dino Melaye lost to his political rival, Smart Adeyemi. The election faced some challenges, and there was a low turnout of voters for the supplementary election. Smart Adeyemi was later sworn in as the new Senator for Kogi-West.

Running for Governor

Dino Melaye also aimed to become the governor of Kogi State. He ran in the People's Democratic Party (PDP) primary election on 3 September 2019. He came in third place with 70 votes. Engr. Musa Wada won that primary election with 748 votes.

In 2023, he was declared the winner of the PDP governorship primary election for Kogi State. He then ran in the 2023 Kogi State Governorship Election. He finished third with 46,362 votes. Ahmed Usman Ododo from the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election. Muritala Ajaka from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came in second.

Laws and Ideas He Supported

During his time in the 8th National Assembly, Dino Melaye supported about 20 bills and brought forward over 30 motions. One important bill he supported was for creating a Federal University of Agriculture in Kabba. This bill aimed to set up a new university and manage it properly.

He also supported a bill to stop people from being harmed by mob action or unfair killings. This bill aimed to protect crime suspects from being hurt without a proper trial. Other bills he supported included the disability integration bill and the protection against domestic violence act. He also sponsored a bill to check issues with government payments and money not being sent to the Federation Account by the NNPC.

Personal Life

Dino Melaye was married to Tokunbo Melaye for ten years. They have three children together. They later divorced due to personal differences.

Melaye is known for his modern fashion style. He often wears clothes from popular brands. Many of his outfits include hats that say "SDM," which stands for "Senator Dino Melaye."

Writing a Book

In May 2016, Dino Melaye released a book called "Antidotes For Corruption: The Nigerian Story." The book received mixed reactions from the public. Some people had concerns about the book's content and writing style.
