Dino Melaye (born on 7 January 1974) is a Nigerian politician. He used to be a senator and was part of the 8th Nigeria National Assembly. He represented the Kogi West Senatorial district. He comes from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Melaye was a senator and a member of the House of Representatives. He is also a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In 2015, he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). Later, before the 2019 elections, he returned to the PDP. He was the chairman of the Senate Committee for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. For a short time, he also led the Senate Committee on Aviation in Nigeria. He was the spokesperson for the 2023 presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.

Early Life and School

Dino Melaye was born in Kano State, Nigeria. He went to Abdulaziz Attah Memorial College, Okene for his secondary education. In 2000, he graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied geography. He led the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Later, he became the Secretary-General of the African Youth Council. He also served as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Youth Council. President Olusegun Obasanjo chose him to lead the Presidential Advisory Council on Youths.

His Journey in Politics

In 2015, Dino Melaye joined the People's Democratic Party. He was re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives. He represented the Kabba/Ijumu federal area.

In the 2015 Senatorial election, he was chosen as a member of the Senate of Nigeria. He represented the Kogi-West district. He supported Senator Bukola Saraki to become the President of the Senate.

He was re-elected on 23 February 2019. This meant he would return as a senator for Kogi-West in the 9th Senate. However, his main opponent, Senator Smart Adeyemi from the APC, challenged the election results. On 23 August 2019, a tribunal removed Melaye from his seat. They ordered a new election. After some disagreements, Senator Dino Melaye lost his appeal on 11 October 2019. A new election was ordered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In the re-run election, Senator Dino Melaye lost to Smart Adeyemi. The election was later declared inconclusive due to some issues in over 50 polling units.

Running for Governor

Dino Melaye tried to become the governor of Kogi State in the election held on 16 November 2019. On 3 September 2019, he lost in the primary election. He came in third place with 70 votes. Engr. Musa Wada won that primary election with 748 votes.

He was later declared the winner of the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Kogi state. He chose Hon. Habeebat Deen to be his deputy. However, he lost the 2023 Kogi State Governorship Election. He came third with 46,362 votes. Ahmed Usman Ododo from the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election. Muritala Ajaka from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came in second.

What He Did as a Lawmaker

Dino Melaye introduced about 20 new laws (called bills). He also brought forward over 30 motions in the 8th national assembly. A motion is a formal proposal for discussion or action. He sponsored a bill to check problems with payments and money not sent by the NNPC to the government.

About His Life

Melaye was married to Tokunbo Melaye for ten years. They have three children together.

He is known for liking modern designer clothes. He often wears stylish clothes from brands like Givenchy and Balenciaga. He often wears hats that say "SDM," which stands for "Senator Dino Melaye."

Books He Wrote

In May 2016, Dino Melaye launched a book. It was titled "Antidotes For Corruption: The Nigerian Story."
