What is a Diocese?
A diocese is a specific area that a bishop is responsible for. Think of it like a region or district for a church. The bishop helps guide the churches and people in that area.
The Diocese of Gothenburg was started in 1620. This means it has been around for over 400 years! It is one of the 13 dioceses in the Church of Sweden.
The Cathedral and its Location
The main church for the Diocese of Gothenburg is the Gothenburg Cathedral. This is where the bishop has their official seat. It is a very important building for the diocese.
The diocese covers parts of three different Swedish provinces:
- Bohuslän
- Halland
- Southwestern Västergötland
This means it serves many communities and people across these areas.
Leaders of the Diocese
The leaders of the Diocese of Gothenburg have changed over the centuries. In the beginning, they were called "superintendents." Later, they became known as "bishops."
The first superintendent was Sylvester Johannis Phrygius, who served from 1620 to 1628. The first bishop was Zacharias Klingius, starting in 1665.
Many different people have led the diocese since then. The current bishop, Susanne Rappmann, took on this role in 2018. She is the first woman to be the bishop of Gothenburg.
