The Diocese of Visby (called Visby stift in Swedish) is a special part of the Church of Sweden. You can think of it like a church district or region. This diocese covers the entire island of Gotland, which is a large island in Sweden.
The main church for the Diocese of Visby is Visby Cathedral. This important church is located in Visby, the biggest town on Gotland. The leader of the diocese is called the Bishop of Visby. This Bishop also has an extra job: they help look after the Church of Sweden Abroad (SKUT). This means they support Swedish churches and communities that are located in other countries around the world.
Leaders of Visby Diocese
The Diocese of Visby was created in 1572. Since then, many important leaders, called Bishops, have guided the church on Gotland. These Bishops help manage the churches and support the people in the diocese.
The first Bishop was Moritz Christensen Glad, who started in 1572. Over the centuries, many different people have served as Bishop. Each one played a role in the history and development of the church on Gotland.
Today, the Bishop of Visby is Erik Eckerdal. He started his role in 2023.
