Diosdado "Dado" Madarang Peralta (born March 27, 1952) is a lawyer and judge from the Philippines. He held the most important judicial job in the country as the 26th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines from 2019 to 2021.
Before becoming Chief Justice, he was an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 2009 to 2019. He was also a presiding justice of the Sandiganbayan, a special court in the Philippines.

Early Life and Schooling
Diosdado Peralta was born in Laoag, Ilocos Norte. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in 1974.
Afterward, he decided to study law. He went to the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Civil Law and graduated in 1979.
He is married to Fernanda Lampas-Peralta, who is also a judge. She serves as an associate justice of the Philippine Court of Appeals.
A Career in Law
Starting Out
After finishing his studies, Peralta first worked for private companies. He later joined the government as an assistant city prosecutor. A prosecutor is a lawyer who represents the government in court cases. He worked in both Laoag City and Manila.
Becoming a Judge
On September 22, 1994, Peralta became a judge for the Regional Trial Court in Quezon City. His court handled serious criminal cases.
In 2002, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appointed him to the Sandiganbayan. This is a special court that hears cases involving government officials. By March 2008, he became the head judge, or Presiding Justice, of the Sandiganbayan.
He served there until he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009. While at the Supreme Court, he was the chairman of the 2014 Philippine Bar Examination, which is the test lawyers must pass to practice law.
Leading the Supreme Court
On October 23, 2019, President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Peralta as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He replaced the previous Chief Justice, Lucas Bersamin. The Chief Justice is the leader of the entire judicial branch of the government.
Peralta decided to retire on March 27, 2021. This was one year before his required retirement date. On April 5, 2021, Alexander Gesmundo became the new Chief Justice.
Awards and Recognition
Peralta has received many awards for his work in law. Here are a few of them:
- Special Centennial Awards in the Field of Criminal Law (2001): Given by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines and the Supreme Court.
- Judicial Excellence Awards (2002): He received the Chief Justice Ramon Avanceña Award for being an outstanding judge.
- Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Award for Law (2008): This is the highest award given by the University of Santo Tomas to its former students.
These awards recognized his important contributions to the legal field in the Philippines.
