University History
In the early 1950s, people in Central Java needed a university. They wanted a place for higher education. This would help the government develop the region, especially in education. At that time, only Gajah Mada University offered higher education nearby.
Many high school students were finishing school. But there were not enough universities for them. So, a group led by Mr. Imam Bardjo created a foundation. This foundation started Semarang University on January 9, 1957. Mr. Imam Bardjo became its first leader.
On January 9, 1960, the university celebrated its third birthday. Indonesia's President, Sukarno, changed its name. Semarang University became Diponegoro University. This was to honor the university's work in education. The new name also remembered "Five Days Battle in Semarang." This battle was part of Indonesia's fight for freedom. The university chose October 15, 1957, as its official founding date. This date connects the university to the nation's heroes.
Today, Diponegoro University is a state-owned university. It has a special legal status.
