Diponegoro University (also known as UNDIP) is a big public university in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. It started in 1957 as a private school. In 1960, it became a public university. It was named after Javanese Prince Diponegoro. This university is the oldest higher education school in Central Java.

University History

UNDIP Pleburan
Postgraduate Faculty of Social and Political Sciences in Pleburan Campus.

In the early 1950s, people in Central Java needed more universities. They wanted places for students to get higher education. This would help the government develop the region, especially in education. At that time, only Gajah Mada University offered higher education in the area.

Many high school students were finishing school. But there were not enough universities for them all. So, a group led by Mr. Imam Bardjo created a foundation. This foundation was called Yayasan Universitas Semarang. They officially opened Semarang University on January 9, 1957. Mr. Imam Bardjo became its first leader.

On January 9, 1960, Semarang University celebrated its third anniversary. The President of Indonesia, Sukarno, changed its name to Diponegoro University. This was to honor the university's efforts in education. The university now celebrates its anniversary on October 15. This date also remembers a historical battle in Semarang.

Since 2015, Diponegoro University has been a "State-Owned Higher Education with a Legal Entity Status." This means it has more freedom in how it operates.
