Dirceu José Guimarães, known simply as Dirceu, was a fantastic Brazilian footballer. He was born on June 15, 1952, in Curitiba, Brazil. Dirceu played as an attacking midfielder, a player who helps both defend and attack, often scoring goals or setting them up. He was famous for playing for many different clubs, especially in Brazil and Italy. Dirceu was also a key player for the Brazil national team. Sadly, he passed away on September 15, 1995.
Club Career Highlights
Dirceu started his football journey in Brazil. He played for popular teams like Coritiba, Botafogo, Fluminense, and Vasco da Gama.
After playing in Brazil, he moved to Mexico for a year. There, he played for América. In 1979, Dirceu signed with the Spanish club Atlético Madrid. He played 84 games for them and scored 18 goals.
In 1982, Dirceu moved to Italy. He played for several Italian Serie A teams, including Hellas Verona, Napoli, Ascoli, Como, and Avellino. He often changed teams each year during this period.
Later in his career, Dirceu returned to Vasco da Gama in Brazil. He also played in the USA for the Miami Sharks. Towards the end of his career, he played for Italian teams Ebolitana and Benevento. His last team was Atlético Yucatán in Mexico, where he finished playing in 1995.
Playing for Brazil
Dirceu was a very important player for the Brazil national team. He played in 44 official games for his country between 1973 and 1986, scoring seven goals.
He proudly represented Brazil in three FIFA World Cup tournaments:
In these World Cups, he played 11 games and scored three goals. Brazil finished fourth in the 1974 World Cup. In 1978, Dirceu was recognized as one of the best players. He won the Bronze Ball award and was named to the tournament's All-Star Team, helping Brazil finish in third place. He also played for Brazil at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games. He was supposed to play in the 1986 tournament too, but an injury prevented him from joining.
His Passing
Dirceu passed away on September 15, 1995, at the age of 43. He was involved in a car accident in Barra da Tijuca, Brazil.
Legacy
To honor his memory, the football club Ebolitana, where he played in Italy, named their stadium the Stadio José Guimarães Dirceu.
