Diriá is a small town and area in Nicaragua. It is part of the Granada department. Diriá is known as a municipality.

What Does Diriá Mean?

The name Diriá comes from the Mangue language. It means "Green Hills." In another old language called Nahuatl, Diriá means "Valley on High."

Where is Diriá Located?

Diriá is in a hilly area. It shares borders with several other towns.

The main town of Diriá is about 64 kilometers (40 miles) from Managua. Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua. The land in Diriá is quite uneven and hilly. It has mountains like Cerro de la Flor, Cerro de las Ardillas, and Cerro Las Piedras.

Diriá is located above the Apoyo Lagoon. This area has three small natural springs. These springs are called Limón River, Chiquita, and Las Pilas.

A Look at Diriá's History

Diriá was home to the Chorotega people long ago. They lived there before the Spanish arrived. In 1528, a priest named Fray Francisco de Bobadilla visited Diriá. He wrote about what he saw there.

The first official count of people in Nicaragua happened in 1548. At that time, Diriá had 1,346 people living there. The name "Hill or Height" in the Mangue language describes where the first people settled. They lived near the Apoyo Lagoon, which is a high area.

Diriá is on the south side of the Laguna de Apoyo. You can see a beautiful view of the lagoon from the Diriá Viewpoint. From this viewpoint, a narrow path goes down to the beach.

The area has a tropical savanna climate. This means it has a wet season and a dry season.

  • It gets between 1200 and 1400 mm of rain each year. The rain is spread out well.
  • The average temperature is about 27°C (81°F). This makes the climate semi-humid.
