Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team facts for kids
The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team was a professional cycling team. They raced in big events like the Tour de France.
Before Discovery Channel, the team was sponsored by the US Postal Service until 2004. Then, Discovery Channel took over as the main sponsor in June 2004. This happened just in time for the new UCI ProTour series of races.
On February 10, 2007, Discovery Channel decided they would not continue sponsoring the team after the 2007 season. This meant the team needed to find a new sponsor.
By August 10, 2007, the company that held the team's racing license, Tailwind Sports, announced that the team would stop racing at the end of the year. They couldn't find a new sponsor. This was partly due to some negative news about unfair practices in cycling during the 2007 Tour de France.
Famous Riders
The most well-known rider on the Discovery Channel team was Lance Armstrong. He won the Tour de France seven times before he retired in 2005.
Other important riders on the team included Alberto Contador, who won the 2007 Tour de France. Levi Leipheimer finished third in that same race. George Hincapie was another key member. When the team ended, these riders had to find new teams to race for. For example, George Hincapie joined Team T-Mobile.
