Distracción (pronounced "dis-trahk-SYOHN") is a small town and its surrounding area, called a municipality. It is located in the country of Colombia, within the La Guajira Department. A "department" is like a state or province.
The town was started in 1845 by a man named Antonio María Vidal. He came from a nearby town called Barrancas. Distracción was built on the right side of the Ranchería River.
Every year, the town celebrates the Festival de los Laureles. This festival is named after the laurel trees. The main ways people make a living in Distracción are through agriculture (farming), raising animals (farming), and a small amount of limestone mining.
Geography of Distracción
The municipality of Distracción is found on the Guajira Peninsula. This area is part of the Upar Valley. The valley is surrounded by two mountain ranges. These are the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá.
Distracción covers an area of 220 square kilometers. It shares its borders with several other municipalities. To the north, it borders Riohacha. To the east, it borders Fonseca. To the south, it borders San Juan del Cesar and Fonseca. To the west, it borders San Juan del Cesar.
