Divisions of Pakistan facts for kids
The Divisions of Pakistan were like big administrative areas within Pakistan's provinces. Imagine a country divided into large sections, and then those sections are divided into smaller parts called districts. That's how Pakistan was organized for a long time.
Pakistan has four main provinces. Each province used to be split into several divisions. These divisions helped the government manage different parts of the country.
Why Were Divisions Abolished?
In August 2000, the government of Pakistan made a big change. They decided to get rid of the "division" level of administration. This was part of a plan to bring government services closer to the people.
The idea was to give more power and responsibility to local councils in districts and smaller areas called tehsils. This way, decisions could be made more quickly and efficiently at the local level.
When the divisions were abolished, there were 26 of them across Pakistan's four provinces:
- Five divisions were in Sindh.
- Six divisions were in Balochistan.
- Seven divisions were in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
- Eight divisions were in Punjab.
It's important to know that this change did not affect the two divisions in Azad Kashmir. Those divisions continued to operate as a separate level of government there.
