Dixie, Grant County, Oregon facts for kids
Dixie is an old, historic place in Grant County, Oregon, in the United States. It's not a big city or even an official town today; it's what we call an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does.
What Was Dixie?
Dixie was once an important stop along an old train line called the Sumpter Valley Railway. This railway helped people and goods move around the area a long time ago. The community was located near a place called Dixie Summit.
How Did Dixie Get Its Name?
The name "Dixie" comes from a nearby stream called Dixie Creek. This creek flows into the larger John Day River, close to a town called Prairie City.
Gold Miners and the Name
The creek itself was named for the many gold miners who worked there. These miners came from the southern parts of the United States. People often called the southern states "Dixie" back then. So, because so many miners from the South were looking for gold along the creek, it became known as Dixie Creek, and the community nearby took the same name.
