Dixie, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dixie is a small place in southwestern Callaway County, Missouri. It's not a big city with its own government. Instead, it's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses without a local town council.

You can find Dixie where two roads, Missouri Routes BB and PP, meet. It sits on a high area of land, like a small hill. To the east, there's the Middle River. To the west, you'll find Hillers Creek. The larger city of Jefferson City is about 12 miles (19 km) to the southwest. Jefferson City is located right on the Missouri River.

A Look at Dixie's History

Dixie wasn't always called Dixie! At first, it had a different name: "Caldwell." A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, opened there in 1880. It was known as the Caldwell post office.

However, the name changed in 1892. The community was renamed "Dixie." This new name came from a girl named Dixie Caldwell. She was the daughter of an early postmaster, who was in charge of the post office. The Dixie post office eventually closed its doors in 1905.
